Hire Purchase Information Limited (HPI) was formed in 1948 and is the oldest recorded database of hire purchase and leasing agreements in the Republic of Ireland. It contains ownership details on almost 500,000 assets from motor cars to office equipment to industrial machinery.
HPI stores information on assets that have a financial agreement secured against them. The data on HPI is provided by banks, finance houses and other lending institutions. Legal ownership of an asset cannot be transferred until all finance outstanding on an asset has been cleared and the asset details removed from the HPI database.
Every time a lending institution issues finance or a secured loan on an asset, they enter all the details on the HPI database - the registration number, the chassis or serial number, and the terms of the loan or finance agreement. When an individual would like to buy an asset, they can first check with HPI to ensure that no finance is outstanding on the asset.
