P. J. Hayes was born on the 8th of March, 1921. He got his first fiddle when he was about ten or eleven years old. In 1946 P. J. Hayes and Paddy Canny (1919-2008), who was later to become P. J's brother in law, formed the Tulla Ceili Band. In 1959 they played on the first album of Irish traditional music which also featured Peader O'Loughlin. Paddy married P.J's sister Philomena in 1961.
