1899 - The first permanent symphony orchestra in Dublin was the seventy strong Dublin Orchestral Society which was founded by Michele Esposito who was an Italian Professor of Piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. The Society lasted until the outbreak of World War I.
1927 -The Dublin Philharmonic Society under the direction of Col. Fritz Brase, head of the Army School, began giving concerts and playing for radio programmes.
1947 - The Radio Éireann Symphony Orchestra was founded. Its initial conductor was Captain Michael Bowles.
1961 - The Orchestra's name was changed to the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra
1970 - The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland was founded on a private initiative but is now primarily funded by the Department of Education & Science
1989 - The RTÉ Symphony Orchestra was renamed the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.
1995 - The Irish Chamber Orchestra, a hand-picked group of players, started at the University of Limerick.
