Eight years ago a locally bred horse, Papillon, won the Aintree Grand National. Papillon, ridden by twenty year old Ruby Walsh and trained by the jockey's father, Ted, was an outsider at odds of 33-1.

Last year an American genealogist discovered that it appears that the great-great-great-grandfather of Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the Democratic candidate for President, has connections with Moneygall on the Offaly / Tipperary border. The records showed that Barack's ancestor, Fulmuth Kearney, was reared in Moneygall, then left for America in 1850, when he was nineteen years of age.
