The word "Limey"

Postby Happy Ms » Wed Jun 04, 2008 3:34 am

Can anyone tell me if the word "Limey" is insulting to Brits?

Someone said it is degrading & insulting such as the "N" word is to Blacks.

I thought it was just a nick name-such as we Americans are called Yanks. That is not offensive to most of us.

Thank you.

Hello Happy Ms,

As far as I'm aware it's not degrading.

I had a look at Answers.com which says ...
"Limey, a national epithet for the English coming from the historical British
naval practice of supplying its sailors with lime juice to prevent scurvy".
